Resolution Addressing Outbuildings in Latah County
Adopted by: Latah County Republican Central Committee - October 28, 2025
Whereas, the US and Idaho Constitutions guarantee the preservation of property rights, and
Whereas, Latah County requires building inspection for the construction of private property structures, and
Whereas, permitting costs have increased significantly in recent years, and
Whereas, there has been mission creep, with more and smaller structures requiring permitting, and
Whereas, commercial ag operators are exempted for their outbuildings, and are therefore able to build with local or self-milled lumber, and
And whereas laws should be uniform, and a commercial ag operator should not have more rights than a hobby farmer, or woodworker, or someone who just needs a shed for his driveway tractor, and
Whereas, previous generations had far more liberty and far more freedom to exercise their property rights, and
Whereas, our taxes go up even as the money is used to infringe on our property rights, and
Whereas, the next generation is being greatly harmed by this trend, and
Therefore, be it resolved that Latah County exempt all outbuildings that are not equipped as residences in the unincorporated parts of the county from inspection mandates and related penalties.
